Crypto Expiry Focus for October 16, 2026: Front-End Positioning Can Still Bend the Tape
An expiry-led desk note on BTC near $82,810, ETH near $2,452, front-end open-interest concentration, and the strike zones that can still bend short-term price action.
The market is still range-bound, but not relaxed. BTC is trading near $82,810, ETH near $2,452, and the tape keeps reacting quickly without producing a decisive move.
The macro backdrop is not providing a single clean catalyst, so price structure and options positioning deserve more weight.. With no clean directional handoff, even small moves can feel larger than they are because positioning is quick to react. The front-end expiry board deserves the first look because it can still bend short-term price action.

Front-end expiries are shaping the script
The front end is dense enough to shape the week. BTC carries the heavier near-dated stack, with 45.4% of BTC open interest and 28.5% of ETH open interest set to expire inside two weeks.
BTC call interest is clustered around $95,000, $100,000, $80,000 with put protection near $60,000, $40,000, $70,000, while ETH calls are concentrated around $3,200, $2,200, $2,300 and puts near $2,300, $1,000, $1,500.
That expiry stack is one reason the range still feels jumpy. There is enough nearby inventory to exaggerate short moves without resolving the broader trend.
- -BTC key expiries: 2026-10-30, 2026-12-25, 2027-03-26.
- -ETH key expiries: 2026-12-25, 2026-10-30, 2027-03-26.
BTC strikes still define the main battlefield
BTC options still carry real size. Total open interest sits near $25.39B, 24-hour volume is around $6.60B, and at-the-money implied volatility is near 29.8%.
The put-call open-interest ratio is 0.55, with the heaviest call interest clustered around $95,000, $100,000, $80,000 and put protection concentrated near $60,000, $40,000, $70,000.
That structure keeps BTC relevant, but it does not yet settle the range. Nearby inventory can still exaggerate short swings around the same price band.
- -Front-two-week BTC OI share: 45.4%.
- -Heaviest BTC expiries: 2026-10-30, 2026-12-25, 2027-03-26.
ETH remains the more reactive expiry trade
ETH is still trading with a richer volatility bill. Total ETH options open interest is around $2.89B, 24-hour volume is near $554.48M, and ATM IV is sitting around 33.6%.
That leaves ETH carrying roughly 3.8 volatility points more than BTC. The spread says the market is still willing to own upside, but it is charging extra for uncertainty outside the cleaner Bitcoin trend.
That premium keeps ETH sensitive inside the range. Even small changes in tone can feel larger because traders are still paying for optionality.
- -ETH put-call OI ratio: 0.44.
- -Heaviest ETH expiries: 2026-12-25, 2026-10-30, 2027-03-26.
Spot still has to validate the expiry read
BTC is trading -0.3% over the last week and +8.1% over the last month. The close is below the 20-day average ($83,651) and above the 50-day average ($81,300), with 20-day support near $79,775 and resistance near $87,238. RSI is around 42.5. That is why short-term traders keep reacting quickly even when the bigger move is still absent.
ETH is trading -1.8% over the last week and +1.0% over the last month. The close is below the 20-day average ($2,589) and below the 50-day average ($2,554), with 20-day support near $2,317 and resistance near $2,779. RSI is around 31.6. That is why short-term traders keep reacting quickly even when the bigger move is still absent.
- -BTC daily volume versus 20-day average: 0.04x.
- -ETH daily volume versus 20-day average: 0.02x.
What to watch into the roll
The range will keep feeling noisy while BTC oscillates around $79,775 and ETH around $2,317 with volatility still sensitive.
Until price picks a side cleanly, traders are likely to keep over-reading small moves and under-trusting follow-through.
The short version
- -Front-end open-interest concentration is heavy enough to make expiry-related hedging a real part of the weekly script.
- -BTC options remain the cleaner read, with ATM IV near 29.8% and key strike interest around $95,000, $100,000, $80,000 / $60,000, $40,000, $70,000.
- -The range does not resolve cleanly unless BTC can hold above $79,775 and ETH can keep defending $2,317 with volatility behaving better.
